How carbonated water was discovered

Although there are plenty of products you can buy that will carbonate your water for you, have you ever wondered how liquid can be carbonated in the first place? Many fizzy drinks today owe their success to the discovery of carbonated water.

Carbonated Water was actually discovered by accident in 1767 by Joseph Priestley. Priestly, credited for discovering Oxygen, is also well known for creating soda water and his research into electricity. In his later life, he was ostracized from the scientific community due to his rejection of the chemical revolution, which was the first incarnation of chemistry.
